Summary

0003385: Hierarchical product categories

DescriptionCurrently products belong to only one category and categories are not hierarchical.

This entry requests:
1) Allow the creation of multiple product categorization schemes.
Each scheme is used for a specific business purpose, for example the categorization that is used for demand planning is different from the categorization that is used for a sales catalog.
2) For each categorization scheme, allow a hierarchical definition of categories. For example:
- Trucks
    - 18 wheelers
    - pick up tracks
- Cars
    - SUV
    - Minivan
    - Sedan
    - Station wagon
    - ...
 3) For each categorization scheme, specify whether a product can belong to multiple categories within that scheme. For example, it makes sense to allow a product to multiple categories in a sales catalog in order to allow multiple access paths, but you cannot categorize a product multiple times for the purpose of Intrastat reporting.

For this point it would be useful to use labels instead of categories, so then a product may belong to 2 categories.

Victor,

I have assigned this old request to you because you are working on this topic.
There are several requirements in it and there is no need to take them as a must but it makes sense to be aware of them during development to put in place foundation for the future or closing quick wins where possible.
